Lauren Raine MFA has made "mythic masks for mythic minds" for over 30 years, at Renaissance Fairs, for theatre, and Mardi Gras. In the 90's she studied mask traditions in Bali with Ida Bagus Anom and others in the 90's, and inspired by her experiences, in 1998 created 35 multi-cultural "Masks of the Goddess" (1998-2008) as contemporary sacred masks devoted to the Divine Feminine. The collection travelled throughout the U.S., used by many communities to celebrate worldwide mythologies of the Goddess through dance and ritual. They have been performed at the Chapel of the Sacred Mirrors in N.Y.C, the University of Creation Spirituality in Oakland, the New College of California, Nations Hall Theatre in Tucson, the Spiral Dance in San Francisco, and many others. In 2007 she received a Fellowship at the Alden Dow Creativity Centre for her “Spider Woman Project” which is based on Hopi and Dineh creation stories. She has also created The Rainbow Bridge Tarot (www.rainbowbridgetarot.blogspot.com)
Masks are all about transformation – for revealing our “Mythic Selves”. Which also happen to be our own selves, just not the ones often enough allowed expression. I make my masks individually from leather, and paint each one by hand. They will not be damaged by a little rain or joyous perspiration, and can be cleaned with a damp sponge.
